pH is the measurement of resistance and indicates the speed of digestion and the creation of energy. It is written as a fraction. For example, a urine pH of 6.2 with a saliva pH of 5.5 is written as:
6.2 urine / 5.5 saliva
To balance the pH of the body, you must know 2 things:
what the pH numbers are
which foods you need to eat to bring both numbers to 6.4
If you're not familiar with pH, please refer to my blog post Reams Biological Theory of Ionization.
pH is tested using urine and saliva. The urine pH represents the lower digestion and the saliva pH represents the upper digestion. Testing is done using litmus paper. Here's what I use:
It's important to use a pH tester that includes the decimal point. pH is measured on a logarithmic scale. A pH of 5.0 is 10 to the 5th power. So, rather than 5.0 being only 2 points away from a pH of 7.0 it is actually 100 times more acidic than a pH of 7.0.
A pH of 7.0 is considered neutral BUT, to be in homeostasis, the pH needs to be slightly acidic at 6.4.
Testing Instructions
If you want to test your pH, testing should be done after lunch.
Don't eat anything for 2 hours after lunch
For the last 30 minutes:
don't drink anything
don't smoke
don't put anything in your mouth
don't put anything on your lips
pH Patterns
pH is assessed by patterns based on the acidity or alkalinity of the body. These patterns represent levels of healing. Pattern 1 is ideal while someone in pattern 5 may be having the most problems. Thankfully, by adding the correct vitamins and minerals through food and/or supplements, restoring health is very possible!
Pattern 1-Ideal
Urine and saliva have a pH of 6.4. This pattern has the fewest problems and can receive maximum energy from food
Pattern 2-Alkaline/Alkaline
Urine and saliva have a pH above 6.4
The digestive system is moving at a slow pace, which can lead to toxins being reabsorbed
The body becomes toxic as waste is reabsorbed into the bloodstream
It is the perfect environment for parasites, yeast, and bacteria to grow out of control
Females in this pattern may experience heavier periods and more cramping due to the reabsorbed toxins being deposited into the uterus
Skin problems, bad breath, and body odor are common in this pattern
A congested lymphatic system is likely; swelling in the extremities can become a problem
The congested liver may begin to cause lines and discoloration between the eyebrows and/or thick, dark, distended veins under the tongue
Back problems and curvature of the spine are common in this pattern
Constipation is common in this pattern
Sinus problems are common in this pattern
Pattern 3-Acidic/Alkaline
Urine pH is below 6.4 and saliva pH is above 6.4
Upper digestion is running too slow while lower digestion is running too fast
The further apart the numbers are the more energy is lost; energy is not being fully extracted from the daily intake of food
Upper digestion is slow due to the acidic saliva so undigested food ends up in the large intestines; this can cause excessive bloating and gas
Food is sitting in the stomach for too long
Abdominal distention is common in this pattern
Joint and muscle problems are common in this pattern
Structural injuries are common in this pattern
Fatigue is common in this pattern
Lower digestion is moving too fast which results in low absorption of nutrients
Bowel movements may be regular but what is being eliminated is days old
Heartburn and regurgitation are common in this pattern
Reproductive issues are common in this pattern
Pattern 4-Alkaline/Acidic
Upper digestion is running too fast while lower digestion is running too slow
Indigestion, heartburn, and regurgitation are common in this pattern
Anemia is common in this pattern
Smokers and coffee drinkers tend to have acidic saliva
Breathing issues are common in this pattern
Blood pressure problems are common in this pattern
Fragile blood vessels are common in this pattern
Leg cramps, aching bones, and aching extremities are common in this pattern
Alternating constipation and diarrhea are common in this pattern
The body's nutrients are being depleted
Pattern 5-Acidic/Acidic
The upper and lower digestion are running too fast
This is called the "stress pattern"; it is often the result of extreme stress and is extremely stressful on the body
Inflammation in the digestive tract is common in this pattern
Because the upper and lower digestion are moving too fast, there's not enough time for food to be broken down, absorbed, or used by the body; this leads to malnourishment
Reserve energy, minerals, and other nutrients are being depleted
Feeling nervous, moody, and nervous fidgeting are common in this pattern
Anxiety and depression are common in this pattern
Colitis, IBS, Cronhn's, and lower abdominal pain are common in this pattern
Parasites flourish in this environment
In an effort to balance the pH, the body will begin to pull minerals from bones and teeth
Cardiovascular system and the urinary system are at risk of damage in this state
Early menopause is common in this pattern
While every number in the formula of RBTI {sugar, pH, salt, albumin, and ureas) is important, Dr. Reams always said, "Above all else, balance the pH." When digestion is running at the proper speed, food is broken down, absorbed, and used by the body to nourish, strengthen, and heal.
